The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) Annual Congress brings together industry colleagues, friends and partners to develop knowledge of advances in radiology and oncology and discuss ways to improve patient care. At the November 2024 congress in London the work of individuals and teams for projects, articles and papers were celebrated with the BIR awards, presented by president Dr Nicholas Screaton.
“Congratulations to you all and thank you for your contributions and commitment to improving healthcare services and outcomes,” the BIR said.
The BJR Barclay Medal is awarded for the best original research paper, deemed of special merit, published in BJR in 2023. Dr Thomas Sartoretti and team were chosen for their paper ‘Photon-counting detector coronary CT angiography: impact of virtual monoenergetic imaging and iterative reconstruction on image quality.’

Dr James Platt and team won the BJR Early Career Investigator Award for the paper ‘The impact of mismatch repair status and systemic inflammatory markers on radiological staging in colon cancer.’ This award is for the best original research paper, authored by an early career investigator, and published in BJR in 2023.

For the best original case published in BJR|Case Reports in 2023, the BIR Dr Prafulla Ganguli Award went to Dr Jason Gan and team for their paper ‘Case series of perianal and pelvic MRI imaging findings in monkeypox.’
The BIR/Bayer Make it Better Service Award went to Dr Natasha Davendralingam, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust post-mortem CT team and South Manchester Coroner’s Service for their project ‘Implementing a cutting-edge PMCT service for bereaved families.’
Lydia Gardner received the BIR Nic McNally Radiobiology Award for her application based on the paper ‘Characterising the role of single strand break repair pathways in response to low and high LET radiation.’
