Emersons Green hospital invests in cone beam CT to enhance facial imaging

Practice Plus Group Hospital Emersons Green, Bristol, has invested £90,000 in state-of-the-art x-ray equipment to improve patient waiting times and enhance the accuracy of diagnostic imaging.

A Carestream Dental cone beam CT scanner, said to be one of two in south Gloucestershire, allows the radiology team to zoom in on areas as small as the root of a tooth, as well as capturing facial imaging and detailed images of bone and soft tissue.

In addition to enhancing the hospital’s digital capacity in dental x-ray, it will aid diagnosis by improving the quality of the x-ray. The process will be faster and more efficient, with benefits to patient comfort and experience. Radiology manager Louisa Shreeves said: “We are delighted with the new equipment that allows us to further enhance the service we can offer in this department.

“Our investment in the very latest diagnostic imaging equipment emphasises our commitment to providing our patients with outstanding service and care, be they NHS, insured or self-pay patients. Everyone receives the same high levels of care from our dedicated team.”

Shreeves added that the department has the ability to CT individual teeth, sinuses, temporal bones and mastoids, and to perform full and partial orthopantomogram x-rays. “We have the potential to perform facial photography and use templating software. We are looking to outsource our services to other
healthcare referrers.”
