Fetal cardiology training delivers results

Dr Orhan Uzun joins sonographers at Royal Glamorgan Hospital Sarah Eilbeck, Rhian Jones (seated at the front), superintendent sonographer Lynne Francis, Emma Pullen and Fiona Jones.

Over the past nine years, cardiologist Dr Uzun and colleagues have undertaken a mass training programme in fetal cardiac screening by visiting every hospital in South Wales.

Following these training sessions, plus twice-yearly MDT case discussions and a yearly fetal cardiology conference, antenatal detection of congenital heart disease in South Wales has improved and Wales has now earned its place amongst the top four centres in the league tables of fetal cardiac anomaly pick-up rate in the UK.

Philips Healthcare supported the latest fetal cardiology training course at Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Wales.  Dr Uzun, of the children’s heart unit at the University of Wales, said: “It is thanks to companies like Philips supporting us in our ongoing teaching and education activities that we have been able to make this dramatic improvement.”
