Interactive device cuts training costs

The Hull-based Vertual company could dramatically cut NHS training costs with its innovative technology.

Virtual environment radiotherapy training (VERT) is a 3D interactive radiotherapy training device that was developed by pioneering trio Professor Andy Beavis, Professor Roger Phillips and James Ward. Already their business has sold 51 systems, with a first year turnover in excess of £3m.

VERT allows students to walk around a virtual training room wearing 3D glasses – using computer generated equipment and a handheld pendant, identical to that of the actual equipment used to simulate surgery.

This removes the need for training to be carried out in expensive radiography treatment suites.
