Oesophageal cancer is the third most common gastrointestinal (GI) malignancy worldwide, with a reported incidence of 9,101 new cases per annum in the UK. Its incidence is higher with increasing age and maximum in the elderly population. It is an aggressive cancer with a late presentation. It has a poor prognosis with a five-year survival of only 15-25%.
