London North West University Healthcare (LNWH) NHS Trust has held the official opening of its Ultrasound Training Academy, having welcomed its first students in the autumn.

The idea to introduce an Ultrasound Training Academy was developed as part of the North West London seven-day services project by the trust’s radiology clinical lead Tanuja Khiroya.

Khiroya worked with Darzi fellow Dr Rebecca Hall and Carol Jollie, formerly of Health Education North West London, on a successful bid for funding.  The radiology department at Central Middlesex Hospital had a disused x-ray room and adjoining examination room, and it was agreed that this could be remodelled to provide the facility required for the academy.  A proposal was drawn up for two ultrasound rooms and a simulator facility, which would be able to support a full range of training for the sonographers.

The funding was not sufficient to fully equip the academy and pay for staff salaries, so the trust invited all manufacturers of ultrasound equipment to help sponsor and create the academy and MIS Healthcare/Samsung offered its help.  The ScanTrainer simulator from MedaPhor is used in many hospitals in the UK and worldwide and will help with staff training at the academy.
