Bespoke biological safety cabinet fits the bill at Sheffield PET-MRI

Sheffield PET-MRI facility has installed a bespoke biological safety cabinet and lead-lined furniture from Bartec and Raditech. Set in a state-of-the-art centre attached to the existing University of Sheffield MRI unit at Royal Hallamshire Hospital, it is said to be the UK’s eighth and Yorkshire’s only PETMR facility.

The cabinet was installed in the dispensing laboratory and consists of a dispensing workstation designed to protect the operator and the product, with integrated shielding, built-in dose calibrator and waste disposal. Shielded storage safes and benchtop castles were also installed to the surrounding bench space.

Royal Hallamshire Hospital clinical technologist Andy Scott said: “Consultant scientist Phillip Hillel and I were able to visit the manufacturer’s facility (pre-COVID-19) and provide more detail on where we wanted specific things, for example where we wanted the Capintec dose calibrator and the size of the shielding.”

Bartec works with manufacturing partner Raditech to ensure end users are involved in each stage, from design to manufacture and installation. This level of cooperation allows the end user to make the most of the space available in their department and to be involved in the process.
