West Suffolk Hospital celebrates the installation of their third Revolution Ascend CT scanner. The Revolution Ascend, GE Healthcare’s leading performance CT scanner. In developing the Revolution Ascend, GE Healthcare has redefined the entire CT experience with Revolution Ascend, a 75cm wide-bore CT system that makes the CT process faster, more intuitive and more approachable, while also providing the image quality you expect. The Ascend systems features an AI-based workflow solution, a smart user interface, cutting-edge technology and access to Smart Subscription to simplify, streamline and automate the entire CT experience.  One key feature of the Revolution Ascend is ‘Effortless Workflow’ – an amalgamation of AI embedded tools to assist the radiographer and radiologists prior to, during and after the CT exam. This includes the automatic positioning of the patient into the iso-centre of the CT gantry. Sam Melero, superintendent radiographer, says: “Auto-positioning has made us get iso-centering right, delivering the ideal radiation dose to the patient.”

In addition to the Effortless Workflow, the Ascend system features an all-new design, sharing key components from the Revolution Apex platform, including the new ‘clarity’ radiographer user interface.  A combination of the new design and Effortless Workflow makes for an intuitive and seamless radiographer experience “It’s smooth, its less clunky, the workflow is better for patients. From my experience when you’re in the room with the patient, you can get them up on the screen in front of you and set protocol and adjust start point which you could never do before.”  These features are making a real impact on the workflow of the CT department: “The image acquisition comes up so quickly and the scan time length is much shorter. The scans are so quick we can scan children and older people with confidence. We are getting through more patients each day!”

The Revolution Ascend features GE Healthcare’s AI powered reconstruction software, ‘TrueFidelity.’ TrueFidelity is trained on filter back projection imaging, giving radiologists the clear image, they seek, whilst reducing noise at an impressively low dose. “When it comes to the image the radiologists really like it, and we like it too! We are no longer compromising image quality by using less dose, with true fidelity we still get great low dose images, but the image quality is far superior. We are getting radiologists who want to use the ascend because of the image quality!”

The impact of the new Revolution Ascend, with its effortless workflow features and new system design is summarized by Josh Wilkinson, deputy superintendent radiographer: “Improvements to the UI make using the Ascend much more intuitive when compared to the previous scanner, meaning it’s easy to pick up and teach a range of skill levels, from our senior radiographers with many years of experience to students only learning CT for the first time. Combining with our confidence in the equipment and the time savings we can make using effortless workflow features, the Ascend has enabled us to focus more than ever on the very reason we are here, our patients.”
