The coat of arms of The British Institute of Radiology

The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) is the oldest medical imaging and radiation oncology society in the world. Since its foundation in 1897 as the Röntgen Society, it has welcomed everyone involved in these fields as members on an equal basis, regardless of professional background or status.

In 2021, the BIR was considering ways of celebrating its 125th anniversary. At that time I was president-elect and, having had an interest in heraldry since childhood, I suggested that applying for a coat of arms for the institute might be an attractive option. The institute’s council agreed, and so began a remarkable heraldic journey for the BIR and for me personally.
