Second-look ultrasound after MRI

The use of MRI to stage breast cancer and its use as a screening tool in the very high risk (VHR) screening cohort have increased hugely over the past 15 years. This has been driven partly by the increasing range of breast conserving surgical techniques that are available.

Recalling patients back to ultrasound for further assessment, or second-look ultrasound (SLU), can be an extremely challenging scenario for both the patient and the imaging practitioner. I use this phrase since it may be a radiologist but, increasingly, advanced practitioners and consultant mammographers will perform the imaging for these complex cases.
