The role of interventional radiology in colorectal liver metastases

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer in women and the third most common cancer in men; around 21% of patients have liver metastases at presentation and up to 60% of patients may develop them during their disease course. Surgical resection of the affected portion of the liver offers the best chance for disease-free and overall survival. Unfortunately, most patients present with disease that is not amenable to resection or have other contra-indications to surgery. It is estimated that only 15-30% of patients are surgical candidates at initial disease presentation.
