Strategic workforce planning in nuclear medicine: building capacity for a sustainable future (a Swansea perspective)
Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) outlines a strategic approach to workforce planning in nuclear medicine, addressing rising demand for hybrid imaging, radionuclide therapy and DXA services. Aligned with national policies such as Health Education and Improvement Wales and ‘A Healthier Wales’, the strategy focuses on building a technically agile, multidisciplinary workforce. Key drivers include an ageing population and rapid technological advancements, necessitating continuous learning and adaptability.
Innovations include hybrid imaging roles, non-medical DXA reporting, and PETCT workforce development through partnerships with InHealth and academic institutions. Training pathways such as PTP, STP and MSc mentorship support career progression. Cross-boundary collaborations enhance service equity and efficiency, while data analysts and training leads strengthen operational planning.
Challenges include workforce ageing, registration barriers and radiopharmaceutical supply vulnerabilities. SBUHB addresses these through succession planning, regional hubs and investment in radiopharmacy infrastructure. Th e integration of clinical research fosters innovation and professional growth.
SBUHB’s model is influencing national policy, with future goals including an all-Wales PET workforce strategy and expanded digital competencies. Its approach exemplifies how local innovation can drive sustainable, high quality nuclear medicine services across Wales.
