Recipient of BNMS award had a transformative impact on nuclear medicine provision in Liverpool

The British Nuclear Medicine Society Radiographers, Technologists and Nurses (RTN) Award has been given to Dr Christopher Mayes from Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
With a career spanning more than 30 years, including over two decades at the forefront of nuclear medicine at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Dr Mayes has had a transformative impact on the field. His leadership in 2010 in commissioning Liverpool’s first PETCT scanner marked a significant leap in the region’s diagnostic capabilities, enhancing services in oncology, cardiology and infection imaging, and introducing groundbreaking diagnostics such as sodium fluoride bone scanning, 68Ga-DOTANOC, 18F-Choline and 68Ga-PSMA prostate imaging, and amyloid brain imaging. Dr Mayes has also played a pivotal role in education and workforce development, lecturing at the universities of Salford and Cumbria and contributing to the creation of a national nuclear medicine BSc curriculum in collaboration with the National School of Healthcare Science and Health Education England.
“A passionate advocate for statutory professional registration of clinical technologists, Dr Mayes’ commitment to upholding the highest professional standards is well recognised,” the BNMS says. “His tenure as chair of the BNMS RTN committee further underscored his leadership in shaping the strategic direction of nuclear medicine practice in the UK. The BNMS congratulates Dr Mayes on this well deserved nomination and thanks him for his lasting contributions to the field.”
