The Spine volume of Elsevier’s long-standing Diagnostic Imaging series has been a mainstay in the offices and reporting rooms of radiologists since the first edition was published 21 years ago. This new fifth edition has had a complete refresh, with hundreds of new diagnostic images and art, alterations to diagnostic categories and new sections focusing on the latest developments in the field of spinal radiology.
Synonymous with the series, the well recognised section and chapter layout remains, and is as easy to read as before. The balance of the bullet point format coupled with sufficient depth of information makes for an easy read without compromising on clinical detail. The six sections of congenital and genetic disorders, trauma, degenerative disease and arthritides, infection and inflammatory disorders, plexus and peripheral nerve lesions, and spine post-procedural/post-treatment imaging, provide the framework for the text, neatly encompassing all the subsections.
Most chapters start with useful overviews of relevant anatomy. The final chapter including post-operative imaging and surgical hardware is particularly useful, especially given the ever increasing range of options of intervention available to our surgical colleagues.
The chapter on cerebro-spinal fluid leak detection and treatment has been greatly expanded, reflecting the significant progress made in recent years of our understanding of this condition, and the imaging techniques and treatment options avail-able. The detailed reference list for this and other chapters has also been updated.
In an age where the physical textbook has been increasingly marginalised due to the wealth of (predominantly free) online resources, only the best publications can justify their price tag for individuals and departments. This text is one of them and remains an essential addition to any library.
