Six years of planning result in a comprehensive and accessible AI textbook for radiographers and more

Professor Christina Malamateniou

In January, the fully evidence-based Artificial Intelligence for Radiographers textbook was published by Springer. Its lead editors are all radiographers – Professors Christina Malamateniou, Karen Knapp, Maryann Hardy and Aarthi Ramlaul – but the book’s more than 100 contributors come from across learned societies and professional backgrounds including radiology, radiography, medical physics, data science, business, implementation science, psychology, medical informatics, ethics and engineering. They serve different areas of practice (clinical, research, education, industry and policy making) and represent a wide geographical distribution globally, including many representatives from The British Institute of Radiology.

With more than 350 pages; 15 chapters designed to be taught or read with equal ease in the classroom, clinic or research laboratory; a glossary; and more than 20 case studies providing real-world examples of AI implementation, the book is intended to be comprehensive and interactive.

The product of more than six years of planning, the book condenses over 100 years of collective experience in AI and publishing among its editors. Content and format were discussed and refined across approximately 100 team meetings, with attention to priorities and a focus on the needs of the workforce, patients and students. Although originally aimed at radiographers, it is accessible to anyone working in the medical imaging and oncology ecosystem.
