UHL centralises nuclear medicine provision at Glenfield Hospital as it adds GE HealthCare SPECT/CT system

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) has strengthened its nuclear medicine capabilities with the installation of a state-of-the-art gamma camera at Glenfield Hospital. The GE HealthCare Aurora SPECT/CT system combines advanced nuclear medicine imaging with high resolution CT imaging, enabling clinicians to assess both the function and structure of organs during a single examination. This will support earlier and more accurate diagnoses, help guide treatment decisions and improve patient pathways.
The investment will expand capacity of the nuclear medicine service, which currently supports around 5,000 patients a year. The service will deliver up to 1,000 additional appointments annually.
The installation forms part of a wider refurbishment and consolidation programme for nuclear medicine services at the hospital, which has become the central hub for the trust’s diagnostic nuclear medicine activity.
Interim group head of nuclear medicine for the trust and University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group Martyn Farmer said: “Installing this new camera and refurbishing our base at Glenfield Hospital represent important steps in shaping the future of nuclear medicine at UHL. These developments will strengthen
the service we provide to patients, increase our capacity and support our teams in continuing to deliver high quality specialist imaging now and in the years ahead.”
The installation was delivered through a managed equipment service in partnership with Ergéa UK. Executive vice president and director of strategic relationships John Muolo said: “Through close collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation, our teams work together to advance care, improve service delivery and support better outcomes for patients.”
