Manchester Metropolitan adds MSK ultrasound to boost physiotherapy training

Esaote at Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University’s department of health professions has invested in an Esaote MyLab E80 ultrasound system after recognising the value of MSK ultrasound in physiotherapy education. Following a pilot using an older portable system, positive student feedback highlighted the need for a modern platform with superior MSK imaging capabilities.

Senior lecturer (physiotherapy) and main user Phil Smith had previously used a MyLab system during his PhD. Working with Esaote account manager Kudzai Musamba, the university selected the MyLab system to support undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy teaching. MSK ultrasound will be embedded into lectures and practical workshops, enabling students to visualise anatomy in real time and better understand the relationship between structure and function. The university plans to explore its use across other health professions programmes.

The MyLab E80’s enhanced image quality and functionality will create a more engaging learning experience alongside digital teaching resources such as complete anatomy. Although students are not being trained as ultrasound practitioners, they will gain early exposure to a rapidly growing clinical skill.
