Atlas Diagnostics launches education academy to meet the growing demand for radiology training opportunities

The demand for radiology in the UK has been increasing steadily due to a combination of factors, including the aging population, which results in a higher need for diagnostic imaging for conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, advances in medical technology, such as improvements in MRI and CT imaging, have expanded the range of conditions that can be diagnosed through radiology, increasing the volume of imaging studies performed.

The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has highlighted that the growing demand is placing pressure on radiology services, with many departments struggling to meet the needs of patients in a timely manner. This has led to concerns about staff shortages across all reporting modalities and the need for an expanded workforce, with the shortfall forecast to increase to 40% (3,670 doctors) by 2028 without further action. In response, the RCR is calling for significant increases in training opportunities for radiologists to ensure that the workforce can keep up with the rising demand, with the Society of Radiographers (SoR) releasing joint guidance with the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) on recruitment of sonographers.

Across all modalities and subspecialties, there is a need for continuous education in radiology to maintain competence, improve practice, and meet evolving healthcare challenges, and a need to engage professionals at every level to ensure high standards are attained and maintained for generations to come.

Whilst models of delivery have evolved in recent years, providing equitable access through remote training opportunities, there remains an increasing need for greater focus on multi-level educational opportunities to support and develop the workforce.

Atlas Diagnostics is committed to delivering value across the UK through the implementation of an educational programme designed to provide continuous opportunity to all radiology reporting professionals and associated clinical roles.

The Atlas Academy, set to expand in 2025, will introduce a national network of education seminars, engaging local delegates through leading keynote speakers, audience-led topics and engaging delivery.
