Barco reveals the factors it considers vital for a breast radiology monitor

Barco is a market leader in radiology monitors, with almost 40 years of experience in the medical visualisation market. The company highlights some important considerations when looking at display specifications, starting with the acquisition machine, which creates breast images with a specific resolution. The resolution of both the monitor and the acquisition system should match as closely as possible to ensure that every image detail can be detected on the screen.

The resolution of breast imaging displays is vital in the interpretation of breast images, says Barco. A high display resolution brings obvious benefits, as radiologists can see details more clearly. Screen format is another important factor. A so-called fusion format combines two stand-alone displays into one, so radiologists can place breast images where they want on the screen, making it easier to compare multiple images side by side.

Higher luminance results in more just noticeable differences, so that subtle lesions can be detected and diagnoses delivered more quickly. Multiple studies indicate that brightness impacts detection of small details during breast cancer screening, reports Barco.

“Some LCD displays can suffer from 25-30 per cent non-uniformity, causing arbitrary patterns or noise. Many medical grade monitors tackle this via integrated uniformity technologies. These help ensure better visualisation of subtle radiographic abnormalities,” the company concludes.
