Benefits of ABUS demonstrated at UKRC

Hitachi Medical Systems marketing communications manager Barbara Dowell is pictured demonstrating the advantages of the Sofia ABUS (automated breast ultrasound) system to consultant clinical oncologist Dr Gordon Read from Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow.

With a 52-second acquisition phase and fast review time, Sofia is said to deliver a highly effective diagnostic solution for the mammographically dense breast that is both time and cost effective.  3D volume data is transferred to the workstation in MPR format which can be reviewed independently in coronal, axial and sagittal planes.

“Breast density affects the sensitivity of mammography and cancer is more difficult to detect in dense breast tissue.  Screening with ultrasound, in addition to mammography may help increase cancer detection rates,” says Hitachi. “Sofia offers supplementary imaging which is fast and comfortable without compression or ionising radiation, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and improving outcomes.”
