Coventry trust is first in the UK to install Aurora SPECT/CT

The nuclear medicine department at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is the first site in the UK to receive the GE HealthCare Aurora SPECT/CT system. The trust has also recently integrated a GE HealthCare Omni Legend 32 PETCT and StarGuide system into the department, enabling it to deliver superior diagnostic imaging to the population of Coventry and surrounding areas.

Head of nuclear medicine and vascular ultrasound Dr Lisa Rowley said: “We are proud and excited that Coventry is the first site in the UK to receive this incredible system. The Aurora, together with the StarGuide, represents a significant advancement in nuclear medicine imaging. The technology will enhance image quality, provide greater diagnostic insights and significantly improve the overall patient experience.”

Clinical lead for nuclear medicine Dr Olu Adesanya commented: “The integration of MIM Software and innovative reconstruction tools such as Clarify DL
has significantly transformed our departmental workflow. We’ve transitioned to whole body SPECT/CT imaging for bone scans, introduced 15 minute DAT scans, and implemented contrast-enhanced CT. Our PET imaging times have been reduced dramatically, from 25 minutes to just seven, despite not yet fully optimising the installed settings, which remains an ongoing focus.”

The department has long-standing experience with GE HealthCare equipment and Dr Adesanya added: “It’s fantastic to now be working with the next generation of GE HealthCare molecular imaging scanners. The image quality is exceptional and these systems will enable us to maintain a high standard of diagnostic service, ultimately ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.”

All three phases of the project, including the building works and equipment installation, were led and managed by GE HealthCare as part of a managed equipment services contract.
