MRI Safety Matters course

The 4th European MRMD/MRSO Training Course, led by Dr Emanuel Kanal, was held from June 3 – 5, 2024, at the Millennium Conference Centre in South Kensington, London. This event united MRI professionals from around the globe to explore critical aspects of MRI safety.

Through detailed lectures over the three days, attendees embarked on a comprehensive journey that covered essential topics such as the safety considerations of electromagnetic fields and cryogens, a practical approach to MRI safety assessment of scanning devices at different field strengths, and standardising the approach to the MRI safety risk assessment of implants. The course also emphasised real-world challenges of clinical application and decision-making, equipping MRI professionals with the tools and confidence to handle complex safety issues in their daily practice.

Barbara Nugent, founder of MRI Safety Matters and author of the MRI Practitioner’s Handbook, said: “This MRMD/MRSO Training Course goes beyond theoretical knowledge; it provides crucial safety information for MRI professionals. The networking opportunities with leading vendors and fellow professionals also create a rich environment for learning and professional growth.”

“A heartfelt thank you to Dr Kanal for enlightening us with his expertise. To our esteemed vendors – Gold Sponsors Esaote and Bayer Radiology UK, and Bronze Sponsors Wardray Premise, Kopp Development Inc, Probo Medical, Siemens Healthineers, Pearl Technology AG, Fujifilm Healthcare UK, and Guerbet – thank you for showcasing your innovations and driving MRI safety forward.”

Uniquely added to Kanal’s course, when run in the UK, are two post-course virtual meetings, taking place a couple of weeks afterwards, allowing course participants time to reflect on and consolidate what they have learned. The aim of these meetings is to encourage participants to ask further MRI safety questions that they would like to discuss. The course coupled with these sessions allows MRI professionals to count a minimum of twenty hours of teaching toward their CPD requirements.

Attendees also received the first edition of the MRI Practitioner’s Handbook, an exclusive resource created by Barbara Nugent in collaboration with a wealth of MRI experts. Tailored for MRI professionals, it is packed with in-depth insights, workplace templates, and MRI resources, serving as a personal workplace organiser. In addition, all attendees received a specially designed MRI Safety Matters conference notebook and pen.

Dr Emanuel Kanal, director of MR services, chief of the division of emergency radiology, and a professor of radiology and neuroradiology in the department of radiology of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre said: “This course is truly transformative. The depth of learning provided is unmatched, ensuring every participant leaves with the confidence to apply their newfound expertise in their professional practice. I was particularly impressed by how engaged the group was, which made the learning experience even more enriching for everyone involved.”

Testimonials from attendees echoed the value of this course:

  • “This course revolutionised my approach to MRI safety with practical, actionable knowledge.”
  • “Dr Kanal’s expertise made complex topics understandable and directly applicable to my work.”
  • “The networking opportunities and resources provided were invaluable for my career growth.”

Save the date for Kanal’s 5th European MRMD/MRSO course to be held in the prestigious QEII Conference Centre, in the heart of Westminster, London, from June 16 – 18, 2025.

Before then, MRI Safety Matters is hosting the 2024 MRI Safety Update and Innovations Day, a hybrid event on Saturday, November 9, at the iconic Royal College of Physicians of London. Attend in person, virtually or on demand for a day full of fascinating lectures and discussions.
