Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre director Professor Roy Taylor, Hairy Bikers Si King and Dave Myers, professor of MR physics Professor Andrew Blamire and Philips Healthcare senior scientist Dr Matthew Clemence.

Celebrity chefs Si King and Dave Myers, aka the Hairy Bikers, were joined by the widow and daughter of former Newcastle United star Charlie Crowe to officially open the scanner suite named after him at Newcastle University’s Magnetic Resonance Centre.

Bought with funds raised in the footballer’s memory, the scanner was unveiled at the Newcastle University Campus for Ageing and Vitality.

Philips Healthcare supplied an Achieva TX 3.0T MRI system with multi nuclear options that was selected, among other reasons, for its consistency – an important requirement for robust science and reproducibility.  The equipment doubles capacity at the centre and will facilitate research into diseases including Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cardiovascular related diseases, and also boost neuroscience research.

Director of the centre and professor of medicine and metabolism Professor Roy Taylor said: “This piece of equipment will allow us to power ahead with our research into all kinds of conditions and diseases, including dementia, diabetes, heart disease and liver disease.”
