Celebrating International Women’s Day – Fiona Spaziani

Fiona Spaziani

To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, RAD Magazine asked just a few of the women who are having an impact in the medical imaging industry to give an insight into their working lives and what led them to a career in the imaging sector.

In honour of International Women’s Day, I find myself reflecting on my career journey and the fortune I have experienced along the way. I serve as the acting radiology country head for Bayer in the UK and Ireland.

As the only girl among four siblings, I was fortunate to receive unwavering support from my parents and brothers, who instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Throughout my school years, my teachers encouraged me to pursue higher education, a refreshing approach compared to previous generations. My father was especially instrumental in motivating me to complete my science degree.

After spending two years travelling and working abroad following my university graduation, I was excited to start my career as a pharmaceutical sales representative with Schering plc. This opportunity set the stage for my professional growth, allowing me to advance through various roles in sales, sales management, marketing and eventually to my current position leading Bayer’s radiology business in the UK and Ireland.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have exceptional leadership and mentorship. I’ve been guided by leaders who encouraged me to be my authentic self and who empowered me to take on roles I had not imagined possible. Additionally, my mentors have shaped me into a leader who strives to support and uplift those around me. While I have faced challenges, such as balancing parenthood with a full-time career, my career progression has been relatively smooth.

In recent years, I have felt particularly recognised for my achievements, especially as some of my son’s friends have sought my advice and mentorship regarding their career paths. It is incredibly humbling to be approached by young women, but it is even more significant when young men reach out for guidance. Some might argue that there should not be a distinction in these actions, but for many women gaining respect for their contributions from young men remains a crucial step in fostering equality in the workforce.

The success I have experienced in my career is largely due to the positive culture and abundant opportunities I encountered at Schering plc, Bayer Australia/New Zealand and Bayer UK/Ireland. Additionally, the support of my family, friends and colleagues has been essential to my professional growth. I have always found joy in my work, making it a pleasure rather than a chore to go to the office each day.

Happy International Women’s Day from Bayer Radiology.

Fiona Spaziani, acting radiology country head, Bayer, UK and Ireland.
