NordicNeuroLab transforms the paediatric MRI experience through sensory distraction

For radiology professionals, achieving patient cooperation during paediatric MRI examinations is a known challenge. Fear, discomfort and the need to remain still for extended periods can affect image quality, prolong study time and even lead to sedation. Aiming to improve this experience, NordicNeuroLab has developed nordicComfortSolution to reduce anxiety and enhance comfort, especially for younger patients.

At its core is a simple but effective principle: reduce stress through sensory distraction. The InroomViewingDevice, a 40-inch display inside the MRI suite, allows children to watch videos or listen to music during the scan. This distraction helps keep them calm and still, reducing the likelihood of movement artefacts and the need for sedation.

The system is driven by the nordicComfortPlayer, a media player operated from the control room. It enables radiographers to select content, adjust volume, display scan progress and send written messages to the patient, all of which help foster a sense of safety and cooperation.

Facilities using MRI entertainment systems report up to a 35 per cent reduction in sedation use, fewer repeat scans and improved workflow efficiency. The system contributes to a more positive experience for children and families, the company says.
