Philips CT 5300 delivers clinical and training benefits at South Tyrone Hospital

Southern Health and Social Care Trust’s South Tyrone Hospital, Dungannon, Northern Ireland, installed a Philips CT 5300 system in April 2024, the first in the UK to do so, and after a year of use radiographers have praised the CT scanner’s specifications. It was procured to provide CT imaging for a regional rapid diagnosis centre based at the hospital.

Lead CT radiographer Lisa Ferguson said: “The clinical experience for patients is optimised by increased radiographer/patient interaction, facilitated by the AI-based positioning camera and interactive gantry controls. This technology allows for in-room scan set-up to point-of-scan acquisition, ensuring faster and more accurate positioning. It’s also a fantastic tool for training new staff in CT scanning.”

Radiographers praised the scanner’s increased weight limit, longer table lengths and lower vertical table level, which improves patient access and comfort. The Precise Image and Precise Cardiac AI-based reconstruction features deliver high quality, lower dose imaging of a range of body parts for various clinical queries. Ferguson added: “We are thrilled to be a first-of-a-kind user of this system in Europe and beyond, and we are eager to share our experience with others.”

The hospital’s investment in the Philips Technology Maximiser programme ensures its services remain up to date, managing the costs of hardware and software upgrades to keep pace with evolving trends in CT scanning. Staff have also found the Tube For Life guarantee to be beneficial.
