Justin Jansen – Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

Clinical Support Worker Justin Jansen has always wanted to succeed but it has been no easy feat for the Walsall Healthcare worker.

The 22-year-old was diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s when he was 13.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural disorder which means Justin’s mind runs at 200 miles per hour and Asperger’s is a form of autism forcing him to slow down at the same time, causing stress and anxiety.

His inspiration to work in the NHS came from his mother who is a ward sister at New Cross. Justin said: “I saw the work that she did and how much of an impact she made, and I wanted to be like her, a woman I have so much respect for, and provide high quality care in a caring andprofessional manner.”

Before working in Walsall Justin was previously employed as a bartender and community care worker. Even with his conditions he has never shied away from roles that are potentially stressful and public facing.

“I didn’t feel comfortable in these roles. I had a gut feeling that I wouldn’t settle at these places and I never did. It wasn’t until I started in the NHS that I didn’t have this gut feeling anymore. It was the first place that made me feel welcomed,” he said. “I actually came across the job by accident, I was mooching around NHS Jobs, saw the job and thought, as I knew nothing about Radiology, I wouldn’t get it, but applied anyway. When I started my job at Walsall, I felt like I instantly fit in. This is definitely where I belong, and I feel so happy here.”

His current job role consists of assisting radiographers and radiologists and ensuring the smooth running of the department. As well as this, he assists in procedures such as biopsies whilst also maintaining a calm atmosphere and persona.

“My management and team are very supportive. They put things in place to make my job easier. They are very understanding, friendly and always willing to help without any judgment. The patients also really make my day.

“I want people like me to know if I can do it, they can do it. The NHS has such a diverse workforce with an open-door policy. Straight away all your qualities will be embraced, and they will look at your skills and cater towards your needs.”

“Every morning I am proud to walk into this hospital and see how far I have come.”

In his spare time Justin likes to play the bass guitar and spend time with his fiancé and two dogs.
