Round-the-clock ultrasound scans

Dr Craig Morris with a SonoSite M-Turbo

Consultants in the intensive care unit at the Royal Derby Hospital are now able to carry out focused ultrasound scans on critically ill patients 24 hours a day seven days a week, rather than calling in support from cardiology or radiology colleagues. A SonoSite M-Turbo point-of-care ultrasound system was donated to the department specifically for this purpose by the British Heart Foundation and the Derby Scanner and Medical Equipment Appeal.

Dr Craig Morris, consultant anaesthetist who leads on ultrasound for the department, said: “The contribution this instrument has already made cannot be over-estimated. It has revolutionised the care given at the bedside in the intensive care unit. Previously we may have had questions about the amount of damage to a patient’s heart, but these can now be answered straightaway and effective treatment can be started almost immediately.”
