ScanLab introduces accurate SNR Calculator for MRI education

SNR Calculator

ScanLab’s Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) Calculator is a feature for its ScanLabMR MRI and CT simulation and education software. It is intended to give MRI technologists, radiologists and educators a more reliable way to understand and optimise image quality. According to the company, SNR calculators currently provided by MRI manufacturers often offer only partial calculations and measurements, failing to capture all the complex variables. In particular, the company says, they cannot account for the composition of various tissues in the imaging slice in real time, which can lead to a misunderstanding of SNR in clinical practice.

SNR Calculator overcomes these limitations by prospectively calculating the true SNR outcome based on a user’s prescribed slices. This allows for the creation of quantitative SNR values that account for all parameter adjustments and physical factors present within the MRI environment. This predictive power means users can estimate SNR outcomes before performing a scan. It allows students and professionals to explore parameter changes, test protocol variations and understand trade-offs between image quality and scan time in a risk-free learning environment.

ScanLab president and creator of ScanLabMR Matthew Hayes explained: “Accurate SNR modelling is a crucial step towards advancing MRI education and clinical practice, because it has never been done accurately before. We believe every user should have access to this level of insight without worrying about whether they can afford it. That is why we’re including the SNR Calculator in all existing licences at no extra charge.”
