Osteoporosis is a condition characterised by low bone mass, increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. In the UK there are over 300,000 patients presenting with fragility fractures annually.

Fragility fractures are defined as fractures resulting from mechanical forces that would not normally result in fracture, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has quantified this as a force equivalent to a fall from standing height or less. It is estimated that in the UK one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone mainly due to a low bone mass and osteoporosis.
