Can AI predict survival from pre-treatment PET images for patients with oesophageal cancer?
Oesophageal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the UK, with a 10-year survival rate of just 12%. Despite advances in diagnosis and curative treatment, the number of deaths from oesophageal cancer remains high, with over 50% of patients diagnosed with stage IV (incurable) disease. It is potentially curable with surgery but carries a significant risk of complication; the decision to treat is important for patients and clinicians. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET (18F-FDG PETCT) is used as part of staging and is used where CT does not show metastatic disease in the liver or lungs.
