Implementing a virtual PACS across multiple hospitals resulting in region wide imaging integration

Cheshire and Merseyside region is a relatively small but very complex health economy. There are multiple trusts, teaching, district general and specialist hospitals, including a cancer hospital.

In 2006 the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) procured a system for storage and display of x-ray images (PACS) across Cheshire and Merseyside region. The radiology information system was provided by HSS (CRIS) which was shared with the majority of the hospitals in our healthcare system. Individual PACS systems, provided by GE, were installed in each hospital. This significantly improved workflow in individual organisations.
