Intelligent paperless working in radiology
I suppose I really should be more understanding when I hear a colleague complaining that the 2,000-slice CT has taken “over two minutes” to download to their PACS workstation at home, for it is all too easy to forget just how significant the digital transformation has been for medical imaging over the last decade or two. The current generation of radiographers and radiology trainees will never know the ‘joy’ of searching through film packets to find the missing seventh sheet of the CT, which is the only one to show the lesion of interest, and for this we should all rejoice. While the true cost-effectiveness of the individual national PACS programmes and other similar projects throughout the UK is still up for debate, at the end of the day the migration of all public and private imaging activity to digital systems should be seen as a significant success story, for staff and patients alike.
