Microultrasound: Applications ahead
The potential of microultrasound to deliver images of exquisite detail has been very well demonstrated in research labs and through work on small animals in many labs, notably recently with equipment from VisualSonics (Toronto, Canada), part of SonoSite Inc. However, although it has found uses in niche applications in ophthalmology, dermatology and other specialisms, major human applications in vivo have not yet emerged. In this forward-looking article, we outline the reasons and describe the work taking place in Dundee, simultaneously to lay the foundations of new applications and to develop advanced, miniature imaging systems to match their requirements.
