Radiology without boundaries: designing workflow for a networked future
Radiology now sits at the centre of most clinical pathways of care across the UK healthcare system. At the same time, radiology has also evolved into a networked model in which distributed reporting practices, cross-site collaboration and subspeciality expertise embedded within multi-professional teams are a normal and essential part of everyday clinical practice.
Demand for imaging continues to rise, driven by earlier use in clinical pathways and increasing desire for precision medicine. This growth, combined with ongoing workforce constraints, is placing sustained pressure on radiology teams to deliver more, often across multiple sites and systems.
Many of the technologies supporting radiology workflows were designed for a different era. This article examines the growing gap between clinical practice and system design, and explores how more coordinated, networked workflows, supported by better orchestration, interoperability and embedded intelligence, can help radiology teams work more efficiently while maintaining high standards of patient care.
