The development of CT and MRI
This celebration of the 500th issue of RAD Magazine provides a useful moment to take stock of the tremendous influence that the introduction of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has made to the practice of medicine. The inaugural issue in 1975 neatly coincides with the decade that these two new techniques emerged and, as the 20th century merged with the 21st, both became of fundamental importance to modern medicine. However it was not all plain sailing; because both CT and MRI emerged at a time of financial stringency, when spending on healthcare was viewed as running out of control, neither had an easy introduction into the workplace.
