Torbay’s additions help meet obstetric challenges

At Torbay Hospital are, seated on couch, midwife Jane Morey and sonographer Sue Dempster, with procurement buyer medical and WCD Sarah Bullen, GE Healthcare sales manager Alistair Wood, consultant obstetrician fetal medicine specialist Shakila Sudhakar, superintendent ultrasound manager Emma Smith, sonographers Susie Bittlestone and Alison Phillips, trainee sonographer Cate Mclaughlin and NHS Supply Chain buyer Emma Pearson.

South Devon Healthcare Trust has acquired several GE imaging devices for the radiology ultrasound and maternity wards at Torbay Hospital.  Two Voluson E8 systems will be used for antenatal and gynaecology scanning, a Voluson e portable for labour ward scanning and a Vscan for fetal assessments.

Superintendent ultrasound manager Emma Smith said:  “The Vscan hand-held system has been of great benefit to women attending the assessment unit when there is suspicion of a breech lie. With training and support the midwives are now happy to perform presentation checks with this system, releasing more high demand scan slots for patients.”
