UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre harnesses ‘always on’ capability of its Philips spectral CT system

Philips at UCLH Macmillan Cancer Centre

University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre, London, has installed a Philips Spectral CT 7500, with a key factor in selecting the model being its ‘always on’ spectral data capability. CT superintendent Tom Newton explained that this was the main factor that set Philips apart. “It offered advanced image quality and diagnostic information that other systems couldn’t match, making it the clear choice for our service,” he added.

The technology provides both conventional and spectral imaging data from every scan, eliminating the need to pre-select patients and ensuring everyone
benefits from enhanced diagnostics, according to Philips.

Consultant radiologist Dr James Roberts highlighted the immediate departmental benefits: “Patients scanned on the 7500 benefit from improved lesion identification, greater diagnostic confidence and fewer indeterminate results. The system’s versatility supports a wide range of clinical applications, such as CT coronary angiography, while the intuitive interface streamlines workflow for radiographers.

“Patient experience has also been transformed. The Philips Ambient Experience lighting system creates a welcoming, less clinical environment, earning positive feedback from patients and staff alike.”

The cancer centre is planning to boost daily scan capacity from 25 to 45 by fully harnessing the system’s advanced spectral data capabilities, thereby increasing efficiency and expanding overall service capacity.
