Toshiba Medical Systems ultrasound applications specialists Erica Oliver and Helen Lockyer, consultant radiologist Dr Luke Wheeler and radiographic helper (RDA) Matthew Gallivan.

University Hospital of Wales (UHW) has received a Toshiba Aplio 500 ultrasound scanner equipped with Smart Fusion technology.  The technology is utilised in conjunction with ultrasound for biopsies of the prostate and UHW is one of the first sites in the UK using this in every day practice.

Consultant radiologist Dr Luke Wheeler said: “The Smart Fusion technique has a learning curve, but then the process is quite straightforward and Toshiba’s support has been excellent.  We are the first site in Wales to have started the procedure and I know that there is interest from other centres.  Hopefully, Smart Fusion will improve the accuracy of targeting prostate cancer, identified on the pre-biopsy MRI.”
