VELA chair’s ergonomics are designed to reduce MSK disorders in mammographers

Positioning with the Vela chair

The VELA Mammography Chair has been designed in accordance with the latest guidelines from Public Health England. Following research by Dr Iram Shabana from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, the chair is designed to address the issue of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) that can affect mammographers.

Traditional mammography set-ups can require practitioners to assume uncomfortable and strenuous positions, greatly increasing the risk of WRMSDs. The VELA chair addresses these ergonomic challenges by offering height adjustability and lateral manoeuvrability, reducing the need for stretching and bending.

The VELA chair includes an adjustable back support and a downward-tilting seat, which optimally positions patients for craniocaudal views, reducing physical strain on the mammographer’s spine and upper body. Foldable armrests and strategically positioned foot brakes enhance accessibility and minimise the need for bending.

In addition, the chair is said to help improve patient experience by providing comfortable stability, reducing the likelihood of fainting or falling during procedures.
