Vertex breast screening

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Vertex in Healthcare UK and regional distribution partner ARJ Medical are supporting a nationwide, AI-powered breast cancer screening initiative in Ghana. The programme aims to expand access to mammography and support earlier detection, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Facilitated by ARJ Medical in collaboration with Soyuz Medical Imaging and Vertex CEO Chris Goldie, the initiative brings together digital imaging infrastructure, AI technology and mobile screening services. Vertex is providing its radiology information system (VRIS) and picture archiving and communication system (VPACS), alongside AI technology from Lunit, to support the programme’s screening workflow. ARJ Medical is facilitating the initiative and supporting its deployment and operational delivery on the ground.

As part of a significant commitment to improving access to screening, Vertex in Healthcare UK, ARJ Medical and Lunit have donated software licences, system integration and ongoing operational support services to help establish a sustainable foundation for the programme.

Bringing breast screening closer to communities

A key element of the initiative is the deployment of two mobile screening trucks equipped with mammography systems supplied by Hologic and Siemens Healthineers. These mobile units will bring breast screening services directly to women in rural and remote areas, where access to fixed healthcare facilities and diagnostic services can be limited.

Vertex’s web-based RIS/PACS platform provides the digital infrastructure supporting the screening workflow, facilitating the management and transfer of medical imaging information and supporting radiology teams in reviewing examinations. Combined with Lunit’s AI-powered breast cancer detection technology, the platform contributes to a connected approach to screening and diagnostic review.

A collaborative approach to healthcare innovation

Each partner brings specialist expertise to the initiative. ARJ Medical facilitates the programme and supports regional deployment, Vertex supplies the core RIS/PACS platform, Lunit contributes AI-assisted detection technology, and Hologic and Siemens Healthineers provide the mammography equipment installed in the mobile units.

This collaboration demonstrates the potential of combining clinician-focused digital infrastructure, AI and mobile diagnostic technology to address practical healthcare challenges.

For Vertex in Healthcare UK, the initiative reflects the importance of developing technology around clinicians’ needs and working with strategic partners to support more accessible, connected imaging services. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the programme reinforces a shared commitment to expanding access to screening and supporting earlier detection for women across Ghana.
