Global forum looks at value of low cost medical devices

Pictured at the Radiation for diagnostic and treatment’ session, one of the oral parallel sessions at the forum, are Mr Rajiv Prasad of IAEA, Dr Maria del Rosario Perez of WHO, Professor Magdalena Stoeva of IOPM, Dr Miriam Mikhail of RAD-AID, ISRRT’s Stewart Whitley and Kristina Hatcher of the US Department of Energy.
The third WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices took place in Geneva, Switzerland, in May when the achievements that have been made in the field since the last forum in 2013 were discussed. The meeting also provided an action plan to address challenges faced in low and middle income countries regarding universal health coverage. It considered the outcomes of the implementation of the World Health Assembly resolution on medical devices and the EMP strategy for 2030.
The ISRRT was well represented at the conference with treasurer Stewart Whitley presenting three workshop papers in conjunction with other organisations. He said: “This was a unique and humbling experience, rubbing shoulders with delegates from around the world and learning how proper access to appropriate medical devices purchased at low costs can transform lives of patients in countries that are under severe economic stress.”
