Second CT system installation calls for specialist lifting skills

Rhenus has carried out the installation of a second CT scanner at a major London hospital.

The project began in 2018 when Rhenus delivered the first CT system and inspected the site for the next phase – delivering an additional CT scanner and two MRI rooms.

Due to the complexities of this stage of the project, craneage was required to lift the system to the site entrance. The added challenge of a contractor erecting a new building in the central courtyard area necessitated extra planning.

Following consultation with stakeholders, the final plan was based around utilising the existing on-site tower crane and bringing in a Rhenus-approved craneage partner to manage the lift. This involved loading from a contractors’ yard in Wimpole Street, over several buildings and landing on a scaffold platform built three stories above. Another tricky aspect was guiding the CT system, since the scaffold design resulted in around four metres of additional height to negotiate.

Rhenus put to work its specialist fleet of vehicles and a team of four transportation specialists, supplemented by the craneage partner’s ground crew team.

Led by the installation manager, all major components were positioned in the room within five hours of the job commencing.
