Leeds adds Maria system to record breast density with radio waves

Micrima continues to increase the number of sites collecting data for the development of its early breast cancer detection system Maria. During December the third Maria breast imaging system in the UK was installed at the St James’s University Hospital site, part of The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The system will initially be collecting data in machine learning processes for functionality improvements to the breast imaging system. Micrima is currently exploring the option of the Leeds site being part of its next study, once the company can provide a Maria breast density score.

Consultant breast radiologist and director and clinical lead for breast imaging Dr Nisha Sharma has a keen interest in breast research and explained her initial interest in the Maria system: “We are excited to be working with Micrima to help promote innovation in the diagnostic pathway. The company is developing a tool that will initially be able to record breast density using radio waves. This may help triage women in the future and support personalised imaging for women with dense breasts, aiding and supporting earlier diagnosis and treatment.”

Further Maria systems have been installed at two UK screening sites, bringing the total number of the systems in use across Europe to five.
