Measuring and explaining CBCT dose safety limits in radiotherapy: the Barts experience

Radiotherapy treatments typically deliver between 2Gy and 6Gy per day to treat patients with cancer. When dealing with such high radiation doses, safety and accuracy are paramount to ensure good patient outcomes.

Over the last two decades, simple conformal treatments have been steadily discarded in favour of the more sculpted dose distributions available from intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and subsequently volumetric modulated radiotherapy (VMAT). The challenge in radiotherapy quickly changed from a planning challenge of how to plan dose coverage with conformal fields, to how to accurately deliver complex VMAT distributions.
