Leading light in ultrasound receives OBE

In June 2024, Bill Smith, from Clinical Diagnostic Services, was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to women’s healthcare. He received his award from HRH Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace at the end of last year.
Smith is regarded worldwide for his pioneering work in developing advanced ultrasound technology and promoting its clinical impact in gynaecology, obstetrics, reproductive medicine and women’s healthcare. He was responsible for developing transvaginal ultrasound and establishing it as a crucial element of modern diagnostic imaging. His technical expertise and clinical work have led to numerous awards and recognition by various professional bodies. He remains an international lecturer having presented at major ultrasound and clinical conferences and he has written a number of papers on the role of ultrasound in gynaecology, reproductive medicine and pregnancy.
