The RSNA 111th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, had the theme Imaging the Individual. Despite the Saturday prior to the show’s opening setting a record for the snowiest November day in Chicago, with 8.4" of snow falling at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and more than 1,000 flights delayed or cancelled, UK sales teams, clinical staff and consultants were well represented, even though some delegates arrived considerably later than planned and via multiple unexpected US states.

On Sunday in the president’s address Dr Umar Mahmood reflected on radiology as both a global community and the individual patient focus. “We have an increasing ability to understand how changes – in genes, in cells, in organs – can interact and lead to disease. Images contain so much information that we can now perform opportunistic screening,” Dr Mahmood said. “We can use imaging to identify subclinical disease in a patient before it becomes apparent – extending precision medicine to an even earlier state – precision health.”

Monday’s plenary session ‘System interventions to foster clinician wellbeing’ was given by Dr Tait Shanafelt, Stanford Medicine’s chief wellness officer and one of TIME Magazine’s 50 Most Influential People in Health. In the session Dr Shanafelt discussed steps radiologists can take to reduce their risk of burnout but stressed that 80 per cent of workforce issues require systemic changes that could benefit from being approached from an occupational health way of thinking.
