Siemens Healthineers introduces DryCool MRI system for use in interventional medicine

Siemens Healthineers has debuted its Magnetom Free.XL, a 0.55T MRI scanner intended to serve as the key element in a new integrated interventional MRI (iMRI) Suite.

“Our goal is to elevate health globally by supporting healthcare providers in efficiently delivering high quality, patient-centred care,” said Siemens Healthineers GB and Ireland business head of MR Alistair Piggot. “Magnetom Free.XL is designed to unlock the full potential of MRI in the interventional suite, expanding the imaging toolbox by matching the right modality to the right patient at the right time.”

The system is planned to operate with DryCool technology, a helium-independent design that eliminates the need for a quench pipe. In 2021, Siemens Healthineers introduced 0.55T MRI, which helps improve visibility of interventional devices, reduce metal artefacts and minimise heat effects. A wide 100cm flared bore opening and optionally lifted magnet are expected to set a new standard for operator access, while ergonomic studies suggest potential for reduced fatigue for interventionalists during procedures.

Meanwhile, myNeedle Companion software is designed to transform MR-guided needle-based procedures through 3D path planning, skin entry-point marking and real-time navigation.

The new iMRI Suite was jointly developed with Cook Medical, using Cook’s decades of expertise in interventional therapies, device design and procedural education.

To support high resolution soft tissue contrast and real-time imaging across a broad range of clinical applications, the system is expected to include XL gradients and the AI-powered image reconstruction technology Deep Resolve. A complete coil portfolio, including form-adaptive contour and interventional coils, is planned.

The Nexaris Dockable Table will enable smooth patient transfer across diagnostic, intraoperative and interventional settings.
