Barts staff help prepare patients for PETCT scan with award-winning film

A patient information video created by staff at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, has won a national award for innovation in healthcare. The video was produced by the nuclear medicine and PETCT team, which was named Innovative Team of the Year 2026 at the British Nuclear Medicine Society 60th Anniversary Spring Meeting.

One of three finalists from across the UK, the team was chosen through a national vote. The film explains what happens during a rubidium PETCT heart scan. Staff recognised that many patients feel nervous beforehand because they are unsure what to expect. The video takes patients step by step through the experience, from arriving at the department to completing the scan, helping to make the process feel more familiar and less daunting. It was filmed and edited entirely by staff using an iPhone, with team members volunteering their time outside working hours.

Clinical service manager Barbara Ribeiro said: “I am incredibly proud of the team and this well deserved recognition for their hard work. The term nuclear medicine can sound quite scary to patients, and we wanted to show that the scan is very safe and that people are well looked after when they visit us.”
