Imaging feline hyperthyroidism

The Feline Hyperthyroidism Treatment Centre in Athens, Greece, has carried out the first veterinary use of the Seracam portable hybrid gamma-optical camera, for imaging feline hyperthyroidism. Eight cats with known or suspected hyperthyroidism were imaged by lead veterinarian Dr Sossanna Bourmpou. It was used to confirm diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Dr Bourmpou said: “Feline hyperthyroidism is one of the most common endocrinopathies in older cats and, although highly treatable, determination of the optimal therapeutic approach and appropriate radio-iodine dose often remains largely empirical. Imaging with Seracam provided immediate and accurate assessment of disease extent, functional distribution of hyperactive thyroid tissue, and individualised therapeutic requirements for each patient. This significantly supported optimisation of I-131 treatment protocols while minimising the risk of adverse effects or repeat treatments. Imaging findings proved exceptionally valuable in facilitating client communication through direct visualisation of the pathological process.”

Seracam was developed by Serac Imaging Systems. CEO Mark Rosser said: “Seeing these first veterinary images is incredibly exciting and demonstrates how Seracam’s hybrid gamma-optical imaging, lightweight portability and intuitive design open up significant potential for the camera to improve patient outcomes in veterinary medicine.”
